The UCSB Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology (CREATE) was established in 1986, and is situated within the Department of Music as well as having strong ties to the Media Art and Technology program and the Allosphere research facility. CREATE serves as a productive environment available to students, researchers, and media artists for the realization of music and multimedia works. We present several concerts per year of electroacoustic music. Courses are offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels in collaboration with several departments. The Center also serves as a laboratory for research and development of a new generation of software and hardware tools to aid in media-based composition. CREATE is committed to maintaining the highest possible level of artistic and technological capability. Professional composers will find the Center a productive place to realize their works. Among those who have made use of our facilities are Iannis Xenakis, Thea Musgrave, and Bebe Barron.
The Thursday April 23, 2009 CREATE Concert featured special guest David Wessel of CNMAT at UC Berkeley, plus a premiere by Curtis Roads. This event was part of Primavera, UCSB’s Festival of Contemporary Arts and Digital Media. Prof. Wessel's talk the following day entitled "From Gesture to Sound: Enaction, Improvisation, Computation, and Composition" can be viewed online.
The UCSB Corwin Chair and CREATE presented a free series of concerts, lectures, and a roundtable discussion featuring three of the pioneers of electronic music: Max V. Mathews, John Chowning, and Jean-Claude Risset. These critically acclaimed concerts were the first to use our superb new sound system from Meyer Sound and featured seminal masterpieces such as Chowning's Stria and Turenas and Risset's Sud and Mutations, works by our own JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, Curtis Roads, and Clarence Barlow, plus new pieces by Max Mathews featuring his resonant phaser filter technique.
All CREATE courses are currently cross-listed with the Media Art and Technology program; see the MAT course list for details.
